Maintaining a healthy weight can be trickier than it looks, but it’s important to do so.

Why lose weight?

Those who are overweight may experience hormonal imbalances, which can delay conception and also make it more difficult to handle the stress of having a newborn. Being overweight also increases one’s risk of developing certain serious health conditions.

Perhaps the most important part of losing weight, though, is the lifestyle changes required to do it: getting regular exercise, an improved diet, proper sleep, better hydration, and healthy ways of dealing with stress are all a part of a good weight loss program, and together they can greatly improve the quality of your life.

What should my goal weight be?

When losing weight, shoot for a BMI between 18.5 and 25, and aim to lose no more than 1 – 2 pounds per week. Keep in mind that BMI isn’t the most accurate system for people who are especially short or tall, and remember that muscle weighs more than fat.

If you’ve been working out and that number on the scale isn’t dropping, judge your improvement based on how tightly your clothes fit or how comfortable you feel with exercise.
