When you’re trying to conceive (TTC), take a daily vitamin to help get you the nutrients needed for your pregnancy. A prenatal vitamin gives you the vitamins and minerals you need while preparing for pregnancy. A regular multivitamin will also do the trick.
In the past, prenatal vitamins were the only vitamins that contained enough folic acid for a baby’s healthy development during pregnancy (especially early pregnancy). Today, most multivitamins on the market contain at least 600 mcg of folic acid, which is the daily recommended value during pregnancy.
There are benefits to choosing a prenatal vitamin over a daily multivitamin while TTC. Prenatal vitamins are designed for pregnancy. You can get acclimated to a particular prenatal vitamin that you can continue taking once you conceive. At the end of the day, you just want to make sure you’re getting enough Vitamin C, Vitamin B12, and folic acid. If you can get the nutrients you need from a daily multivitamin that you already like, feel free to stick with it! If you haven’t started taking a vitamin, choose a vitamin that works best for you.
Your Virginia Premier Benefits
If you’re trying to conceive, you may want to consider setting up a preconception appointment with your healthcare provider. This appointment is a great time for you to ask your provider any questions you may have about trying to conceive and early pregnancy. You can also discuss topics like which prenatal vitamin is best for you.
If you do get pregnant, Virginia Premier may provide coverage for your prenatal vitamin depending on which vitamin you choose and if you have a prescription.
Your Virginia Premier plan covers preconception appointments as preventive care.
